Photograph of Canal WMA

Canal WMA, owned by the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, consists of 2,491 acres along the Rediversion Canal just north of the town of St. Stephen in Berkeley County. This long, narrow WMA offers small game hunters several of the state's most productive public dove fields and acres of early successional habitat for quail hunting. Dove hunting is allowed only on specific days as listed in the annual Public Dove field list. Quail hunting is allowed on specific days listed in the Rules and Regulations for Hunting and Fishing and Wildlife Management Areas booklet. Bank fishing for shad and catfish is a popular activity here, and anglers with boats may launch at the Arrowhead Boat Landing off of Hwy 45 east of St. Stephen. Seasonally, interesting nongame species can be observed in abundance, including painted buntings, bald eagles and ospreys. All visitors, including boaters, should pay close attention to restricted areas posted by the Corps of Engineers. For questions about Canal WMA, please call the Dennis Wildlife Center in Bonneau at 843-825-3387.
