Activities / Facilities
Edisto River Wildlife Management Area (1,375 acres) is located in southwestern Dorchester County, SC, just north of US Highway 17-A. The Edisto River forms the western boundary of the tract. The area is comprised of two separate tracts separated by a narrow, private land parcel, which extends east to west from County Road 137 (River Road) to the Edisto River. Two small adverse tracts also intrude into the property from the east. The area may be accessed from County Road 137 (River Road) and from County Road 162. Road 137 joins US Highway 17-A just east of the Edisto River. From Summerville, travel west on Highway 17-A for approximately 4 miles. Then bear right onto Highway 61. Travel Highway 61 for approximately 1 mile. At Coachman Crossroads, turn left onto secondary road 162. The tract starts on the left in about five miles.
The predominant over-story species on the area are bottomland hardwood (61%) and loblolly pine stands (28%).
General Visitation: The area is open for casual visitation with access limited to County Roads 162 and 137 (River Road) and to primary interior roads, which are open on a seasonal basis. Running Water Road off of Sand Pit Road leads to the parking area from where the interior of the property may be accessed.
Public hunting is available for deer, feral hogs, turkey, raccoon, waterfowl and other small game as published in the Department's annual Rules & Regulations for hunting and fishing. Turkey hunting is restricted to Thursday through Saturday during April as prescribed by the SCDNR Turkey Brochure.
