Samworth Wildlife Management Area (WMA) is owned and managed by the South Carolina Department of Natural Resources. Consisting of 992 acres of wetlands (802 acres managed) and 266 acres of uplands, the tract is characterized as a waterfowl management area, but provides management capabilities for a wide variety of game, non-game, and fishery resources. Most of the area was acquired through donation of Dirleton Plantation by Thomas G. Samworth. Additional acreage was purchased and current operations are funded with State and Federal monies through Federal Aid in Wildlife Restoration.
The 802 acres of managed wetlands are divided into 13 management units. Moist soil management is used to target the growth of smartweeds and panic grasses. Selected units are managed as semi-permanently flooded areas targeting the growth of white waterlily and watershield.
The area is managed as a single unit with periodic hunts scheduled throughout the season. The number of hunters per hunt is currently 6. Please note that the Carr Creek Category 2 Waterfowl Area is limited to the creeks only. It is illegal to cross over dikes and waterfowl hunt within Samworth WMA.
