The Sandy Beach Waterfowl Management Area is a diverse ecosystem. A wide range of plant and animal species are present. In 1989, Hurricane Hugo caused extensive damage to much of the forest, creating habitat changes which will be evident for years. The area is part of the Department?s Wildlife Management Area program through a cooperative agreement with the landowner.
The 300 acres of wetland habitat at Sandy Beach is divided into 2 wetland management units. Approximately 50 acres are planted into agricultural crops, 100 acres devoted to moist soil management, and 150 acres is considered to be lake cove habitat.
Sandy Beach is hunted weekly through the statewide lottery. Boats, blinds and decoys are provided. Six hunters are accommodated for each hunt.
