This waterfowl area is located within Santee Cooper Wildlife Management Area
This 2,828 acre area is a diverse example of Upper Coastal Plain wildlife habitat, with a wide range of wildlife species present. The management area is surrounded on three sides by Lake Marion and includes 850 acres of shallow water and cypress flats within the boundary. Two hundred acres of high ground are planted annually for wildlife, with the remaining acreage being in mixed pine-hardwood, bottomland hardwood and regenerated pine stands. In 1989, Hurricane Hugo caused extensive damage too much of the forest, creating habitat changes which will be evident for years. A unique feature of Santee Cooper Wildlife Management Area is the numerous small (1-3) potholes, which are found throughout the area in virtually all habitat types. These wetland areas contain water all year except for periods of extreme drought.
The area was traditionally a part of the statewide lottery program but has been withdrawn from the program due to the lack of waterfowl.
